WANT TO STOP SHOUTING?

by Richard Digard

Apropos of nothing and because it’s nearly the weekend, what’s your view of caps lock?

I’d never thought about it until this morning when a piece in Wired News was picked up by my RSS aggregator (yes, life is that sad).
It said that the chief exec of iMatix has started a campaign to get keyboard manufacturers to drop the offending key.
The CEO, Pieter Hintjens, clearly feels strongly about this.
“The caps key is an abomination,” Hintjens writes on his blog (http://capsoff.blogspot.com/). “It’s a huge key, stuck right there where the Ctrl used to be, and as far as I know, it’s only used by 419 scammers and Fortran programmers.”
Anyway, it wasn’t until then that I realised how irritating caps lock actually is, well, to me at least.
The way we work here means that the tab key gets a lot of use and, being immediately above caps lock and me being a three-fingered typing hack, the subsequent tapping comes out in capital letters.
Hence the Capsoff campaign’s slogan STOP SHOUTING.
A colleague, similarly plagued, hit on the simple if unsightly solution of levering off the offending key but was dismissed for damaging company property so the technique might not catch on.
See you next week.
